The University of Bucharest

The University of Bucharest is one of the leading institutions of higher education in Romania and enjoys a considerable national and international prestige, acquired within its 145 years of activity. Its various schools are well known for their activities in all major scientific and academic domains. Graduates of the University of Bucharest have included many prominent personalities, that have practiced as teachers and researchers at renowned universities all over the world, members of the Romanian Academy and of similar institutions in other countries, writers, politicians (members of the Romanian parliament, ministers, prime ministers and presidents), diplomats, high-ranking ecclesiastical personalities etc.
In Romania and abroad, the University of Bucharest is largely considered to be the country’s leading educational and research institution. Its numerous generations of students and teachers have succeeded in  turning the institution into a reference of the Romanian spirituality.

The University of Bucharest offers a variety of courses at all levels of higher education: 22 short-term programmes, over 60 long-term programmes, 12 long-term distance learning programmes, over 100 master’s degree and advanced study programmes, over 50 doctoral programmes, advanced postgraduate programmes, and programmes of professional conversion and perfection. All these programmes are accredited or authorised by the Romanian Ministry of Education.
Degrees granted by the University of Bucharest are recognised in most countries. The University also organises study programmes in co-operation with leading foreign universities; graduates of these programmes receive degrees both from the University of Bucharest and from the partner university.

In the scientific research area, the University of Bucharest is one of the most important centres in Romania. There are over 50 research institutes, departments and centres functioning within UB, most of which cooperate with similar centres in other countries.
The UB’s portfolio of scientific activity is impressive. The value of the grants won in national competitions was so far has been consistent and came as a support for teachers, doctoral programs coordinators and other researchers that brought to an end over 100 international contracts.
These past years, the University of Bucharest has repeatedly taken first place in national competitions for research funds. Some of the research centres have been recognised as excellence centres at the European level. Outside Bucharest, the University has research bases at Sinaia, Brăila, Orşova and other pilot centres in various localities in the country.

The University of Bucharest is part of a wide network of international education cooperation, including over 100 bilateral agreements with universities in over 40 countries, and participation in European academic and research programmes (former Leonardo da Vinci, Erasmus, Lingua, Naric, UNICA, AMOS, TEMPRA etc). Every year, over a thousand students of the University of Bucharest benefit from programmes of training or specialised study in universities in Western Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, etc. Some tens of foreign academics from all continents teach in the faculties of our University, while members of our own staff likewise teach at leading universities in other countries.

The University of Bucharest has been and will continue to be a trend setter and initiator of a set of major measures for the reform and development of the higher education system, which have been successfully adopted also by other universities in the country, and in some cases have led to the elaboration of new laws and national regulations. In 2000, the University of Bucharest has received the Diploma of Excellence offered by the Ministry of Education.
